Starting a business is no small task. Start a business that requires significant startup capital and you’ll need to start looking for funding to help get your business up and running. Crowdfunding has become one of the more popular ways to raise money in the past couple of years. With platforms such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo leading the way, entrepreneurs can seek funding on a much larger scale.

Crowdfunding is a great way to raise extra money, but doesn’t always guarantee the backers a return. Some of the most funded crowdfunded projects were a success, while others have had troubles finding success. Here are a few of the more popular crowdfunded projects and how they did.

Pebble Time

Holding positions 1, 3, and 6 on the list for different versions of their watch, Pebble Time has raised almost 45 million dollars in total towards the development of their signature watches. After struggling early on with shipping on time, the company was eventually bought out by Fitbit.

Coolest Cooler

Receiving over 13 million dollars in funding, Coolest Cooler created a cooler complete with a blender, USB charger, cutting board, lid light, and several other features. Over two years after the estimated initial shipment, most backers still had not received their coolers. Coolest Cooler informed the backers they could have their coolers shipped for an additional $100. The company is currently under investigation by the Oregon Department of Justice.

If starting a business is one of your dreams, crowdfunding might be an option for you. Other options include obtaining credit geared towards small businesses as well as finding little ways to make some extra money.
