    Kickstarter as a storytelling platform

    Pros

Kickstarter allowed us to connect directly with our supporters. While we don’t have a big marketing and PR budget (zero, actually), we do think our story is pretty compelling. And Kickstarter provides the perfect environment for storytelling. We envisioned our campaign as an event that everyone can rally around in an environment where Nava's story isn’t simply an afterthought – it’s the main event.

    Cons

Once the campaign ends, there is no grace period to edit your project page, like if you wanted to post a thank you or link to pre-order a product. You have to do any revisions before the clock stops; then your page is frozen forever. This is especially difficult for projects that are not sure what to prepare for because they are super close at the end.

Hit Our Goal within 48 hrs

    Pros

First and foremost, the network of curious backers they've amassed. Those strangers carried our campaign very far, to almost triple our goal. We're incredibly thankful to them and to Kickstarter for that. Second, the brand that they've created by curating the right projects. Particularly relevant to us is their filter against charitable projects. Our company has a social purpose side to it, but Kickstarter prohibits projects from mentioning that which is honestly a great call. A lot of projects/companies can be tempted to use social good as a crutch for an otherwise indistinguishable product/project. For us, it's product first, purpose second, and Kickstarter's rules helped us solidified that position. The projects that get through Kickstarter's gauntlet are (for the most part) truly innovative. Acceptance We spent a significant amount of time researching Kickstarter's rules, and studying strategies other campaigns used to be successful. We thought we wouldn't hit any snags, but when we applied we were actually denied because one component of our messaging hinted at "nutrient enhancements" which is not within Kickstarter's allowed products. The person who reviewed our project let us know the reasons why, and after we corrected it we were promptly approved. The whole process was quick and relatively painless, and the response time was great. Funding From Strangers This is truly what carried our project. We organized our network to create a surround sound effect upon launch that helped us hit our goal of $18,000 in 48 hours. That put us at the top of the "Popular" section of Kickstarter, and that exposure carried us through the rest of the campaign. It became self-sustaining. When all was said and done, we nearly tripled our goal, and 63% of our funding came from Kickstarter discoveries (that hadn't been referred to our page via email, social media, etc). A whopping 63% from strangers - we're still in shock.

    Cons

We wish they would have had mechanisms in place for official stretch goals. Outside of that, we were surprised by some of the projects they chose to feature. Not just in that we weren't chosen, but we saw a lot of other great projects on the platform that we would have chosen over the ones featured. But, that's more of a personal opinion. Truly, Kickstarter is a great platform.

Kickstarter as seen by a Canadian entrepreneur

    Pros

You get A LOT of sales from Kickstarter's "shoppers". In my case it was 50% (other 50% was from media coverage I could get by myself). For pre-selling a design product, I think Kickstarter is by far the best available option at the moment. Love the platform.

    Cons

Must be in USA or UK (or have a partner in one of these countries). This makes it less accessible to Canadians.

Its an exciting platform to raise awareness and funding for your projects

    Cons

It was extremely stressful and basically required you to commit 24 hours a day. If you did not stay on top of it, people would start backing out.

    Excellent platform

    Pros

Overall, I have been extremely pleased with my Kickstarter experience. The website backend is very intuitive for project owners, so I had no trouble figuring things out on my own - plus the detailed statistics have been very valuable to me. Kickstarter is also an amazing resource for gaining *new* fans that stumble upon your project directly though the site. At the end of my campaign, a whopping 34% of my pledges derived from this direct traffic! There are other sites out there that work similarly, but probably don't have communities nearly as established. I am so excited to have all these new fans.

    Cons

My main gripe is that you can't change your funding goal once the project has been created. Mine was entirely funded within 24 hours of launch, so I wound up adding in several "stretch goals" to keep the momentum going and give fans more fun rewards. You also can't add new rewards to the pledge level descriptions (they aren't editable except for available quantities), so any updates in that regard will only display in the main text and posted updates if you mention them. For someone quickly browsing the page, they might not notice the new prizes offered. So with that being said, it would be very useful if Kickstarter could build in some sort of system to manage stretch goals and prize updates. My only other issue was that I encountered a couple of bugs when trying to post updates to my backers. Occasionally the editing feature would freeze up or not go through, and I had to wait for customer support to fix it. (Luckily, they were pretty quick about it.) So I recommend that you type out all of your content in a text document on your computer so that you don't lose your work-in-progress if a bug pops up!

    Kickstarter for INVISIBLE RIVER

    Pros

I loved how Kickstarter drove more attention to my project's SEO ratings. I just did a google search and when I search "INVISIBLE RIVER" my images and my project are at the top. This would not have happened without Kickstarter. I also got a lot of attention from backers that I did not know and press because it was on this site.

    Cons

I don't like how all the backers have to go through Amazon payments to make their pledges. A lot of people complained to me about this and opted out of contributing through Kickstarter and instead sent me a check donation. So the ease of usability is not always that great.

    Kickstarter helped our show

    Pros

Kickstarter is a great way to crowd fund your project especially at the moment because there is a lot of buzz about the website in the media as of late.

    Cons

I don't like that I have to name my own price. In the future I will probably do more of a ebay auction type situation where bidders make their own price.

    Fantastic Community

    Pros

Kickstarter has become an incredibly powerful crowdfunding tool. Not only does it allow artists to easily tap into their own networks, but it also supplies its own ever-growing community of backers who are all small-scale art patrons. Nearly 50% of my project's funding came from people who found the page via Kickstarter.

    Cons

I wish that the project description editor allowed for basic HTML and a little more control over image/video embedding.

KickStarter Is Great for the Self Motivated

    Pros

Bottom line it worked! offering me a point of visibility for Fund Raising that was legitimate. And a layout to follow through on in the presentation of my goal.

    Cons

Primary dislike was that if you don't reach your goal you get nothing. Moving around the site was clumsy. determining who was in what donation category, and matching shipping addresses was horrific. Finally set up our own XL Spreadsheets to keep track of perk fulfillments sent out and quicker contact sourcing. (my campaign was over a year ago they might have made improvements since then.
